Just a Nibble

I read in some magazine recently that Scardello Artisan Cheese up on Oak Lawn had put together a cheese sandwich menu for lunch.
I had never been into Scardello and I love cheese, so I decided to make a little visit.

I don't know much about cheese, only that I abhor goat cheese and that sheep cheese takes a close second in the "no thank you" category. In this place, however, the knowledge of cheese abounds!! Their refrigerated glass case almost overflows with the tasty treat.
Each cheese is staked with a little card that tells the name of the cheese, the cheese lineage, characteristics of the cheese, and what it would pair well with.
That wealth of information alone is enough to drop by for.

They have a menu that features cheese plates with dried fruits and honey. This looks like a pretty amazing deal and it will probably be worthy of a follow up visit. To accompany your cheese plate, Scardello also offers a few wines to choose from. Lovely combo!

(the fruits and nuts available to accompany your cheese plate)

You can choose from a list of five sandwiches, each one with unique flavors. I chose the Stewart's Cheddar Press and it was a savory blend of cheddar and pickled, curried green tomatoes. They make the sandwich from scratch while you watch. They slice the cheese, grill it and put it together for you. Each sandwich is accompanied by a salad complete with their house made vinaigrette....for the low price of $8.12 with tax. You can choose to eat there at the few tables they have, or you can take it to go.
I took mine on the road.
It was heavenly.

Aside from this place having delicious sandwiches, they also sell the cheese (of course!). Along with the cheese, they also sell the things that accompany cheese and make us fall in love.
The walls were lined with jams, tapanades, butters, honeys...all to serve the cheese and make it better. There were baguette loaves at the front counter that looked authentically Italian and were packaged in little brown bags.
All in all, it was a pretty amazing display of knowledge and products. Scardello offers cheese classes, which you can learn more about by clicking here.

Drop in and patronize this joint if you like cheese and have a few minutes.
It is well worth the time.
